Discovering Your Core Spending Values

Show me a person’s spending, and I can show you what they love.

In my early 20s, I discovered a secret that significantly decreased my financial stress and guilt. I was feeling pressure to keep up with The Jones and participate in small or large social events that I really didn’t want to attend. But then something out of this world happened to me….

Just kidding, nothing happened. I have no sex story to tell you how I discovered this turning point, but it happened.

What happened was that I started to understand my spending habits and discovered my spending values. What expenses brought true happiness and which ones made me feel like shit. I noted those feelings and uncovered what made me spend on stuff that gave me little or temporary joy.

Here are my families core Spending Values:

Travel

Culinary Experiences

Financial Security

Personal Development/Education

What is not important to us:

Cable TV / Streaming

Vehicles

Decor

Clothes

There are no right or wrong answers here. What matters is being honest with yourself so you can live a life in alignment with your finances.

It’s also important to note that if you are in a relationship, your partner’s values may or may not align with yours 100%. While you might care about clothing, maybe your spouse doesn’t but really cares about having a nice car. Finding your values as a couple and as individuals will help alleviate financial stress in your relationship as well.

What about you?

I would love to hear your core values, and even more importantly your Anti-Values. Will you reply back to let me know once you have completed the worksheet?

I’m a real human on the other end of this email and I love hearing from you.
